Rattler Family, our senior high girls track and field team had just three competitors at Tuesday's Class 2A State Meet in Quitman, but they made quite a statement. The trio posted six Top 5 finishes, including two wins and a runner-up, to finish fourth in the state -- just four points from third place. Sophomore Elizabeth Merritt won state championships in the 1600M and 3200M runs, and sophomore Jailynn Sims finished state runner-up in discus. Merritt also finished fifth in the 800M run, Sims fourth in the shot and freshman Phoebe Hopper third in the 3200M run. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 18, beginning at 4 p.m. in the old high school gym. Cost is $5 per player/$30 per team of six. Admission for spectators will be $1. Three Rattler competitors finished in the Top 50 -- sophomore Caleb Staton (43/50 score) and freshmen Sam Hartman (41/50 score) and Zayne Allen (40/50 score). There were 547 competitors in the event.
