
Rattler Family, a Magazine community outreach group will host a Back to School Clothes Closet for those needing assistance getting school clothes for their children in Pre-K through 12th grades. The group will accept new or gently worn clothing donations at the Gloria Perry Community Center on July 31-Aug. 1 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Families needing assistance will be able to shop/pick up clothing (two suits of clothes per student as long as supplies last) on Aug. 2 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Gloria Perry Community Center with the three-day use of the building being donated by the City of Magazine. Monetary donations will also be accepted to go towards the purchase of undergarments and socks. Any clothing items that are not distributed will be used to stock the Magazine Schools clothes closet or donated to BHDC, the Maggie House or area children's shelters in need. Rattler Family, Magazine Schools is offering several summer reading programs for its students. Its Rattler Summer Reading Challenge encourages Pre-K through 12th-grade students to continue reading throughout the summer. Computers are set up in the high school cafeteria for students to take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests on their summer reading selections. Students will receive prizes for completing their AR tests. The summer reading incentives are made possible through grants awarded to Magazine Schools through SOAR and Dollar General. Rattler Family, Magazine Schools and Dollar General encourage Pre-K through 12th grade students to continue reading during the summer break with the incentive-based "Ratter Library on Wheels" Summer Reading Program. As part of the program, students keep a reading log documenting the number of minutes they read each day. A minimum of 20 minutes each day is recommended. Students reading 20 or more minutes daily will be rewarded with field trip experiences. Free books are available in the high school cafeteria.
